The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) is pleased to announce the 31 awardees of the program’s final two-year grants to support research on effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
$65 million in grant funding to support research by individuals and consortia. RFP-VI will provide funding for Individual Investigator/Collaborations and Research Consortia for up to two years (2018-2019).
There have been two large scale oil spills over the past 4 decades in the Gulf of Mexico. The Ixtoc I spill in 1979 off the coast of Carmen, Mexico released 3.5 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf, and the Macondo wellhead blowout off the coast of Louisiana, USA in 2010 released 3.19 million barrels of oil into the Gulf.
The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) Research Board announced today that it will award nearly $38 million to individuals and teams studying the effects of oil on the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem and public health. A total of 22 research proposals are being funded under this most recent GoMRI program.
Oil Spill Research Makes Great Strides with Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Funding
The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) has selected 12 research consortia to conduct scientific studies of the impacts of oil, dispersed oil, and dispersant on the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem and public health.
About $27 million will support research on the effects of the Deepwater Horizon incident on Gulf ecosystems, public health.
GoMRI announced today that it plans to award up to $105 million to support research consortia investigating the effect, and the potential associated impact, of hydrocarbon releases on the environment and public health
