Sea Grant Releases Publication on Microbes and Oil Degradation
Posted on May 15, 2018The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) is pleased to announce a new Sea Grant publication that explains the role that microbes play in using oil as an energy source and removing it from the environment. -
Study Finds Small Scale Ocean Currents Cause Clustering of Floating Material
Posted on May 10, 2018Researchers analyzed how satellite-tracked ocean surface drifters moved in the Gulf of Mexico to learn how other floating materials (oil, plastics, marine organisms) move. -
Grad Student Lichtler Examines Mammalian Cell Response to Oil Exposure
Posted on May 8, 2018Oil contains thousands of different compounds that each affect the environment and living organisms differently. While some compounds have been well-studied, there are exponentially more that have not. -
Study Assesses Fish Otoliths for Metal Exposure after Deepwater Horizon
Posted on May 4, 2018Researchers examined metal exposure patterns in otoliths from six offshore fish species with varying health status to identify changes corresponding with the Deepwater Horizon incident. -
Grad Student DeLeo Used Genetics to Explore Oil, Dispersant Effects on Deep-Sea Corals
Posted on May 1, 2018Responders to the Deepwater Horizon incident applied unprecedented amounts of chemical dispersant on the surface oil slick and into the deep underwater plume forming from the riser pipe. Shortly thereafter, researchers observed that a brown flocculant material containing oil and dispersant components covered some deep-sea corals near the incident site. -
Breakthrough method in oil-spill sensing reported in SPIE Journal of Applied Remote Sensing
Posted on April 30, 2018A measurement of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil slick thickness/volume with critical socio-economic implications has been reported by researchers from a range of academic, government and industry bodies including the University of South Florida, the U.S. Geological Survey, NOAA, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Managements, and Abt Associates. -
Look for these Tools and Resources for Oil Spill Research in 2020
Posted on April 27, 2018Eight years after Deepwater Horizon, we reflect on the extraordinary establishment of the largest coordinated scientific endeavor around an ocean event – the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) – to understand, respond to, and mitigate impacts from this and future oil spills. -
Sunlight reduces effectiveness of dispersants used to clean up oil spills
Posted on April 25, 2018A new study shows that sunlight transforms oil spills on the ocean surface more quickly and significantly than previously thought, limiting the effectiveness of chemical dispersants that break up floating oil. -
Dr. Rita Colwell Shares Her Journey to Inspire Women in Science
Posted on April 24, 2018“I was not going to be stopped,” said Dr. Rita Colwell describing how she faced hurdles, many related to being a woman during her 60+ year science career, and blazed paths, including her being the first female director of the National Science Foundation. -
Call for nominations: Standing Committee to advise on the Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems Research Campaign
Posted on April 21, 2018The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invites you to nominate experts to serve on a new standing committee to guide the Gulf Research Program in the design, planning, […]
