The nation will be looking to Florida State University and its expertise in the marine sciences as it studies the long-term after effects and changes in the Gulf of Mexico following last year’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
On Tuesday, the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Research Board, charged with administering BP’s commitment, announced that eight research consortia will share $112.5 million of that $500 million over the next three years.

USF’s College of Marine Science announced today it’s getting another $11 million to do research on the effects of the spill on the ecology of the Gulf. Much of the research will focus on the effects of dispersants used to keep the oil off Gulf beaches.

Research Board Requests Proposals to Establish Consortia to Study Effects of Deepwater Horizon on the Gulf of Mexico
GoMRI has created a selection process that includes an open Request for Proposals, peer review of the submissions, selection of the Research Consortia to study the five research themes, and award of funds during the summer of 2011.

BP today announced it is providing $10 million to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) under its Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) to support a study of potential public health issues relating to the Gulf oil spill and other spill-related health research.
