Scientists Encouraged to Participate in the Decadal Survey of Ocean Sciences

The National Research Council is conducting a Decadal Survey of Ocean Sciences (DSOS 2015), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) is sponsoring this effort. Dr. Rita Colwell, Chair of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) Board encourages its funded scientists to participate and inform this effort with their ongoing work.
This study will review the current state of ocean knowledge, identify compelling scientific questions for the next decade, analyze infrastructure needed to address these questions, and identify opportunities to maximize the value of NSF investments.
The DSOS committee feels strongly that this report must be informed by broad and thoughtful community input from across the entire spectrum of ocean sciences. The DSOS committee is holding town hall sessions at the AGU annual meeting in San Francisco in December 2013 and at the ASLO/TOS/AGU Ocean Sciences annual meeting in Honolulu in February 2014. In addition to soliciting comments at the professional meetings, the scientific community can provide input through a “virtual” town hall.
The DSOS committee’s report will present a compelling research strategy for increased understanding of the oceans over the decade 2015-2025. For more information, go to the National Ocean Science Research Priorities: Decadal Survey for Ocean Sciences.
The GoMRI Research Board consists of twenty members – ten appointed by the Gulf of Mexico Alliance and ten appointed by BP. The Research Board is the decision-making and oversight body regarding research conducted pursuant to the GoMRI. The role of the Research Board is to ensure the intellectual quality, research effectiveness, and academic independence of the GoMRI programs.
The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) is a 10-year, $500 million independent research program established by an agreement between BP and the Gulf of Mexico Alliance to study the effect, and the potential associated impact, of hydrocarbon releases on the environment and public health, as well as to develop improved spill mitigation, oil detection, characterization and remediation technologies.
