Opportunity: Postdoctoral Research, Physical Oceanography, CONCORDE

The Ocean Sciences Branch of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) at Stennis Space Center (SSC), MS is seeking a postdoctoral associate in physical oceanography with research interests in the areas of ocean observations, ocean mixing, ocean fronts, and biophysical interactions.
The candidate will work with NRL researchers as part of the Consortium for oil spill exposure pathways in COastal River-Dominated Ecosystems (CONCORDE) team. CONCORDE is a newly funded consortium under the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative consisting of 16 researchers from The University of Southern Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Naval Research Laboratory, Old Dominion University, Oregon State University, Rutgers University, and the University of South Alabama. CONCORDE has a specific mentoring plan in place and postdoctoral researchers will have the opportunity to participate in annual conferences and consortium team discussions. The successful candidate will be required to have a doctorate in oceanography or other relevant discipline and should be able to demonstrate capabilities in publication-quality scientific analysis of physical oceanographic data. During the fellowship, the successful candidate will work with a wide variety of in situ data with a strong emphasis on observations collected by moorings and a towed profiler in the vicinity of riverine plumes from the Mississippi coastal area. The candidate will be working closely with a small team of CONCORDE researchers to determine physical processes and mixing rates during dedicated experiments, and with the larger consortium to determine their impacts on potential oil exposure in a riverine plume dominated environment.
The Naval Research Laboratory’s Oceanography Division is located in Mississippi as part of the facilities of Stennis Space Center within commuting distance from New Orleans LA, Gulfport MS, and their surrounding communities. NRL is collocated with the Naval Oceanographic Office, the Matthew Fontaine Maury Oceanographic Library, and regional campuses of two Mississippi universities, thus creating synergetic opportunities for collaborative oceanographic research. NRL itself has a large group of diversely skilled and internationally recognized physical oceanographic researchers for the successful candidate to interact and work with.
The successful candidate will be hired with stipends of approximately $75,621 through the Naval Postdoctoral Program of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) or the National Research Council (NRC) Research Associateship Programs (http://sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/rap/ or http://nrl.asee.org/). The position is funded for two years and is expected to start in July 2015, but arrangements can be made for an earlier or later start date as needed by the candidate.
