Sea Grant Releases Brochures on Oil Spill Impacts on Sea Turtles and Dolphins
– MAY 18, 2017
The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) is pleased to announce new Sea Grant informational brochures on two popular marine animals – sea turtles and dolphins – that many people were concerned about after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Now seven years later, scientists have a better understanding about how they fared.
The brochure Sea Turtles and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill addresses the risks, rescue, and impacts to sea turtles during and after the spill. Other topics covered include the sea turtle life cycle, threats and protections, and the rise and fall of the Kemp’s Ridley.
The brochure The Deepwater Horizon’s Impact on Bottlenose Dolphins addreses the health and stranding patterns of dolphins across the Gulf Coast states during and after the spill, including fetal distress. The brochure includes findings from the Natural Resource Damage Assessment.
The Sea Grant Oil Spill Outreach Team synthesizes peer-reviewed science for a broad range of general audiences, particularly those who live and work across the Gulf Coast. Sea Grant offers oil-spill-related public seminars across the Gulf Coast. Click here to view upcoming science seminars and read about recently-held events. GoMRI and the Sea Grant programs of the Gulf of Mexico (Florida, Mississippi-Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas) have partnered to create an oil spill science outreach program.
The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) is a 10-year independent research program established to study the effect, and the potential associated impact, of hydrocarbon releases on the environment and public health, as well as to develop improved spill mitigation, oil detection, characterization and remediation technologies. An independent and academic 20-member Research Board makes the funding and research direction decisions to ensure the intellectual quality, effectiveness and academic independence of the GoMRI research. All research data, findings and publications will be made publicly available. The program was established through a $500 million financial commitment from BP.
