Several GoMRI-funded consortia participated in festivals and camps this summer. The Aggregation and Degradation of Dispersants and Oil by Microbial Exopolymers (ADDOMEx) consortium attended Artist Boat’s World Oceans Day Festival, held at Stewart Beach in Galveston, Texas, on June 8, 2018. The Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE) partnered with the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science on their Integrated Marine Program and College Training (IMPACT) Upward Bound summer camp program. During the camps, students learned about currents and drifters, made currents in a rotating tank, and decorated drift cards for CARTHE’s Bay Drift Project. The drift cards will be launched in September in Biscayne Bay. Visit CARTHE’s Facebook page for more information. The Ecosystem Impacts of Oil and Gas Inputs into the Gulf (ECOGIG) consortium hosted their third Ocean Discovery Camp at the University of Georgia’s (UGA) Science Learning Center in partnership with UGA’s summer academy. The campers learned about deep ocean ecosystems, designed and built their own remotely operated vehicles, created their own public service announcements, and much more. The Consortium for Simulation of Oil-Microbial Interactions in the Ocean (CSOMIO) and Florida State University’s (FSU) Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) participated in the Oasis Center for Women and Girls Girls Can Do Anything camp in August 2018. The attendees learned about weather and climate, and they also learned about coding and the computer programs that run robots like COAPS’ Lego AV3 robot, Ada. The Consortium for Advanced Research on Marine Mammal Health Assessment (CARMMHA) recently released a suite of education and outreach products geared towards educators and students. The resources include a guide for educators, a dolphin coloring page, a fact sheet on learning how to analyze graphs, a dolphin medical exam check list, and more. Be sure to check them out here! The Coastal Waters Consortium (CWC) also recently released the July 2018 issue of their newsletter Notes from the Field. The issue features information on indicator species, an interview with CWC research assistant Jordan Logarbo, a word search, and more.
