Summer 2018 – Synthesis & Legacy

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative’s (GoMRI) Synthesis and Legacy efforts are beginning to blossom into their respective core area workshops. Interweaving these meetings with the consortia and individual investigator-led workshops and synthesis efforts will determine how to best capture the program’s scientific discoveries and results going forward. Continuing through 2019, preparations for these workshops are well underway. The following workshops are coming up in the next quarter:
- Toxicology of Oil in Vertebrates: From Fish to Humans will be held from October 23-25, 2018 in Boulder, Colorado. Led by the Consortium for Advanced Research on Marine Mammal Health Assessment (CARMMHA), the objective of this workshop will be to synthesize and describe what is known about oil-related effects on marine The synthesized report will aim to inform future oil spill response and assessment efforts of marine mammal populations.
- Gulf of Mexico Marine Mammal Research (Core Area 3) will be held in Washington, D.C. from October 31-November 2, 2018. Through this cross-consortia workshop with the Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center – Gulf Ecological Monitoring and Modeling (LADC-GEMM) consortium and CARMMHA, participants hope to develop a plan that synthesizes what has been learned about marine mammals, examines remaining data and information gaps, and provides recommendations on future directions and priorities within marine mammal and habitat research.
- Development of an Operational Community Health Observing System for the Gulf of Mexico States (Core Area 4) is to be held in Washington, D.C. as well, from November 14-16, 2018. This workshop will center around developing the framework of an operational community health observing system to serve the Gulf of Mexico states.
- Marine Oil Snow Sedimentation and Flocculent Accumulation (MOSSFA, Core Area 2) will be held from November 27-28, 2018 in Galveston, The purpose of this cross-GoMRI workshop is to continue the MOSSFA working group’s original mission to integrate and coordinate research efforts associated with oiled marine snow formation, dynamics, and impacts to inform larger ecosystem health and response efforts.
