Grad Student Richards Uses Fish Muscle Tissue to Explore Deep-Sea Food Web Structure
Posted on July 12, 2018The deep-pelagic habitat (200 m depth to just above the seabed) is the largest habitat in the Gulf of Mexico, yet we know very little about it compared to coastal and shallow-water habitats. -
Study Describes Design and Testing of an Effective Biodegradable Ocean Drifter
Posted on July 10, 2018Scientists detailed how they designed and tested an ocean drifter that tracks and measures shallow-depth (0.60 m) surface currents. The final version, called the CARTHE drifter, is made from a polymer produced by bacteria fed with corn sugar. -
New Sea Grant Publication Describes Underwater Research Technology
Posted on July 3, 2018Have you ever wondered how scientists ‘see’ under water? The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative is pleased to announce a new Sea Grant publication about the technology scientists use to look at and study the deep ocean, specifically manned and unmanned vehicles. -
Student Researcher Blogs Highlight Exciting Deep-Ocean Discoveries
Posted on June 28, 2018The Gulf of Mexico is one of four “super-diverse” ecoregions in the world; yet, we don’t know much about how its deep environment changed after Deepwater Horizon because very little was known about it before the spill. -
Study Evaluates Short-Term Oil Toxicity in Deep-Sea Crustaceans
Posted on June 26, 2018Researchers conducted 48-hour toxicity experiments on deep ocean crustaceans (200 – 1000 m depth) to determine the impact threshold levels for one polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH, 1-methylnaphthalene) under various environmental conditions. -
Study Tracks Sediment Resuspension Events in the Northern Gulf of Mexico
Posted on June 21, 2018Researchers identified small- to hurricane-scale resuspension events using time-series data of sinking organic material near the Deepwater Horizon site. -
Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Synthesis & Legacy
Posted on June 19, 2018(From Spring 2018 Newsletter) The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) will come to an end in 2020 after 10 years of dedicated research efforts to understand the impacts of the […] -
Rita Colwell First Woman Recipient of Global Water Research Prize
Posted on June 19, 2018The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative congratulates Dr. Rita Colwell on her selection as the 2018 Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Laureate for her work in revolutionizing the fight against water borne diseases. -
Study Finds Currents One Centimeter Below Ocean’s Surface Greatly Affect Material Transport
Posted on June 14, 2018Researchers conducted a first-of-its-kind measurement of the vertical dynamics of water motion near the ocean’s surface in the northern Gulf of Mexico. -
Smithsonian Presents Interactive Story Map to Learn Where Deepwater Horizon Oil Went
Posted on June 12, 2018The Smithsonian’s Ocean Portal published an interactive tool featuring maps and graphics showing where Deepwater Horizon oil traveled. The story map also includes locations for where responders applied chemical dispersants on the Gulf’s surface and other sources where oil enters the Gulf, such as offshore oil and gas platforms and natural seeps.
