Opportunity: Post-Doctoral Research Associate, Physical Oceanography, CONCORDE

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Marine Science has an immediate opening for a POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE in the field of PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHY.
The successful candidate will work with a large, multidisciplinary team of senior and early-career scientists, graduate and undergraduate students and staff in the Consortium for Coastal River-Dominated Ecosystems (CONCORDE) to explore novel transport pathways of oil and dispersant systems in coastal waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico.
The successful candidate will have a doctorate in oceanography or other relevant discipline and will demonstrate capabilities in at-sea sampling and data/model analysis. The successful candidate will assist in analyzing operational model output and satellite imagery, and a wide variety of in situ data including from moorings, gliders, and ship-based sampling. He/she will be working with the team to determine physical processes in a strongly fluvially impacted environment from the shelf-wide circulation to small scale mixing, and biophysical interactions and pathways of transport to the coast. Salary is very competitive, and benefits include health insurance and retirement options. Travel to workshops and conferences as well as several cruises is required. The position will be based out of USM’s Department of Marine Science located at Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, MS, the single-largest concentration of oceanographers and hydrographers in the world. The successful candidate will be required to pass a NASA background security check to work at Stennis, as well as a USM employment background check.
CONCORDE is a newly funded consortium under the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative consisting of 16 researchers from The University of Southern Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Naval Research Laboratory, Old Dominion University, Oregon State University, Rutgers University, and the University of South Alabama. Post-doctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students will be mentored according to a CONCORDE mentoring plan, and all are expected to participate in annual conferences and consortium team discussions.
