The NRC Advantage
GREAT MINDS. ONE GOAL. CANADA’S SUCCESS.
The National Research Council of Canada represents a powerful partnering option for anyone looking to push the boundaries of science and industry. In fact, as the Government of Canada’s largest research organization supporting industrial innovation, the advancement of knowledge and technology development, we have become catalysts for innovation. For over a hundred years, the impact of our work with industry leaders and other government bodies has shaped Canada’s future. We partner with some of the most creative and solutions-driven minds in the world.
And now, we want to partner with you. Be part of our collective force to come up with potentially disruptive solutions to Canada’s current and future technology challenges. Let your expertise and inspirations make an impact by joining the NRC.
The Program
The NRC’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program offers PDFs access to unique world-class facilities and the opportunity to work alongside multi-disciplinary teams of expert researchers and technicians on projects of critical importance to Canada. PDFs will carry out research on innovative research projects, with opportunities for career development (publications and/or industry interaction).
PDFs will be offered appointments to the staff of the National Research Council on a term basis and will be offered salaries and benefits currently available to Research Officers. Salaries commensurate with experience are taxable and subject to other deductions. As a guide, the current annual PhD recruiting rate is $68,567. In addition PDFs will be allocated a travel fund to support their work.
Project Title
Phytoplankton as bio-sensors for monitoring ocean health
Your Challenge
Due to their ubiquity in aquatic systems, phytoplankton are becoming organisms of choice for developing bio-sensors and models to monitor and predict ocean health and the impact of human activities on the marine environment. Indeed, phytoplankton populations continuously evolve and adapt to their surrounding environment, and can therefore be employed as valuable diagnostic tools if we can better measure, characterize and understand the short- and long-term responses of these microbial communities to environmental stressors, including pollution events.
NRC is seeking a PDF researcher to lead the identification and characterization of phytoplankton species that decline or proliferate in response to petroleum oil exposure and develop DNA-based markers for informative species so that they may be quantified in situ in the ocean environment. Based on the emerging field of environmental DNA (eDNA) and new sequencing technology platforms, various sampling techniques and bio-sensing methodologies will be developed and assessed for the collection of real-time data from the marine environment.
