Opportunity: Postdoctoral Research Associate, Fisheries Oceanography/Ecology, University of Southern Mississippi
– OCTOBER 3, 2017
The Fisheries Oceanography and Ecology Lab (Department of Coastal Sciences, University of Southern Mississippi) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of Fisheries Oceanography. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team of senior and early-career scientists at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and Oregon State University on a project funded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative to examine the ecology of deep-pelagic larval fishes in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The overall goal of the project is to address major knowledge gaps for the Gulf of Mexico by describing the abundance, distribution, vertical migration behaviors, and diets of deep-pelagic larval fishes and their plankton prey, and how these organisms and their food webs are connected to the upper ocean. Specific objectives and additional project details can be found on our website. The position will be based out of USM’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory located in Ocean Springs, MS.
The successful postdoc candidate must have a doctorate degree in biological/fisheries oceanography or a related field, a strong quantitative background, and a demonstrated ability in publishing results in the peer-reviewed literature. Preferred qualifications also include: experience in ichthyoplankton or zooplankton taxonomy and identification, particularly mesopelagic taxa; previous research experience related to plankton trophic ecology; and experience managing large databases. The appointment is for two years (preferred start date in January 2018), with the possibility of renewal contingent upon performance and availability of funds. Salary is $45,000/year, and benefits are included. Eligibility for this position is conditional on a USM background check.
