Sea Grant Publication Gives Overview of Marine Oil Spill Response Options

he Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative is pleased to announce a new Sea Grant publication that describes how decisions about oil spill response are made. Each spill event is unique, and factors such as weather and sea conditions, geography, and oil type and volume are considered when responders select the most appropriate tools and techniques to protect people and natural resources.

Sea Grant Publication Explores Connections and Differences between HABs and Oil Spills

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) is pleased to announce a new Sea Grant publication that discusses the concerns that people had about harmful algae blooms (HABS) being triggered by residual oil from the Deepwater Horizon incident. HABs have occurred after oil spills in the past, but the relationship between the two is not always clear.

Oil Spill Science Outreach Team Honored with Highest Sea Grant Extension Award

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative is pleased to announce that its partner Sea Grant and their Oil Spill Science Outreach Program received the National Superior Outreach Programming Award for synthesizing research results related to the Deepwater Horizon incident and engaging audiences who rely on healthy marine ecosystems to learn of their needs and share the latest science.

New Sea Grant Publication on Oysters and Oil Spills

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative is pleased to announce a new Sea Grant publication about how oysters, which play a critical role in a healthy coastal wetland, fare when faced with oil exposure. The outreach publication also discusses how the Deepwater Horizon incident and subsequent response efforts affected oysters, a vital part of Louisiana’s seafood industry which is the nation’s second-largest seafood supplier.
